I'm getting pissed off, for good reason. I got a job and I thought life was going to get better. It was going to get me out of the house more... I was going to make some money, things were great. A couple of weeks ago I started getting days off. This week I only got 11 hours. I make more than minimum wage but I'm not making anything because I don't get enough hours. I worked 2 days this week. I used to like my boss, I still think there is some good in everyone, but he is being a jerk. I wanted to confront him today, but I didn't. I thought that if I did, he'd fire me because when I get mad and I say the things on my mind, it would happen.
I knew something was up when I got a day off and a co-worker asked me why I didn't come into work. I knew before that he had been getting hours that I should have gotten. I had a day off and I went into work the next day and he had told me about a unit he did the day I had off. I thought nothing of it then. TODAY, on the other hand I was really pissed off when my boss told me he had so much work to do on my day off that he had to work until 9pm. Another slap in the face is that they don't even spell my name right on my pay cheque.
I'm making less than 600 bucks a month and that just seems impossible to live on. especially when just rent alone is more than that. Seems like things aren't getting better after all, but there is always hope. Hope is all I seem to have left.
I'm going to talk to my boss and I'm going to tell him that either I get more hours or he can get another employee. It would be the worst time to quit because he only has 2 employees come tuesday as it is because one of the guys is going back to school. Then they can keep all the work for themselves and not have to think about giving any to me. I'm just not impressed at all. I finally get a job and this is what I get after trying so hard. I know there are no perfect jobs, and not many paying more than I'm getting now, but most people have to work out deals to get days off. They just don't seem to want me around.

Going in to talk with your boss with an ultimatum (give me more hours or I quit) could blow up on you. Instead, you could use your time off to look for another job and keep earning at least a little bit of money (you probably already are) I realize that this is easier said then done, but if you had a new job lined up then when you talk to your boss you have more leverage. If they truly "don't want you around" you can probably get a reference from him before you go for an interview since he can't out-right fire you without cause. Also, with people leaving for school maybe an opportunity for more hours will come up. Good luck with your talk. Keep cool!
For Real, uncle Sean.
Besides...I worked for these types before...They are cheap and they use you IF they need you. They would rather work long hours themselves than use another body.
That being said, don't burn bridges. Honestly, Canadian Chick....$600 a month is not enough money to live. Not when you have a child. You could find another job. Use that free time to do so.
Do yourself a favour. Do what I did. With average computer skills (which you seem to have) and some personality, you could work for Bell Sympatico in the call center. If you work hard, you can do really well. I started out there myself and have done REALLY well for myself (I don't want to say anymore!). If you speak french (I don't know if you do), then you could be a good candidate. Look up either Anjura Services or Calian on the net. Look up the Ottawa office. CALL THEM. Tell them you are interested in working for Bell Sympatico and ask them about the requirements for the job. If nothing is available, ask to be put on a waiting list.
That...or other angencies, would be a great way to go.
Don't wait around for it. Go get it.
Much luck!
