Things to Think About

For the past three days, I've woken up early.
I've been reading a chapter before I get out of bed,
been eating in the mornings. (Still too sore to exercise though).
I've been thinking of some things.
Some things I used to think about a long time ago.
Things I had stopped thinking about for quite a while.
While I was focused on other things.
Such as my emotions and relationship stuff.
It's fine to think about emotions, though.
Just if a person isn't ready for a relationship,
they should focus on other things.
Things that will prepare them for a lot more in life.

Yes, it can be lonely without companionship.
Friends can only fill so much of a void.
But when it is looked at as a void, not much if anything will fill it.
There are gaps and inconsistencies in my life.
But I cannot rely on anyone to fix that. It's up to me.
I have to be strong enough on my own first.
It took me so long to realize that. Some people never do.
They think 'love' is the cure for all. That isn't real love.
Relying on someone to 'save' you from yourself
is a lot of pressure for the person being relied upon.
Sapping all their strength to become stronger, isn't the way.
Some people aren't very strong to begin with.
So they don't have much strength to draw from.
It's more about building our own reservoirs.
Our own reserves to use when we need to.

The quote for today is:
"The only person you are destined to be
is the person you decide to be."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

The decisions we make are based on the choices we have.
Not just the choices we have, but it is a large part of it.
There's more to it, of course.
But we can't just make decisions based on how we feel.
We could, but are those the best decisions?
I've made rash decisions based on how I felt at the time
that I regretted over the years, for years.
At the same time, things happen for a reason.
Maybe it was due to the fact that I'm due to make more changes.
More changes than I have already made in the last 10 years.
If things don't change, then we can hardly change.
When we make changes, other things change.

"When we change the way we look at things,
the things we look at change."

But not only that, "When things change,
the way we look at other things change."

"Every good coach imparts to their 'students'
the kind of self-discipline required
to achieve the ultimate
from mind, heart, body, and soul."

(adapted from a quote from George Pocock)

I've been reading a book called "The Boys in the Boat"
about a rowing team from Washington, who against all odds,
won gold in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

It takes a lot of discipline to become an Olympic rower.
Rowing is much more than the act of rowing.
They all have to row with precision, in tandem.

It's about learning to see hope when we couldn't see it before.
"To see skill where skill is obscured by ego or anxiety"
"Observing the fragility of confidence, yet building it anyway"
Confidence is something that has to be cultivated.
The power of finding redemption through trust.
Not just trusting others, trusting ourselves,
trusting the process of transformation,
trusting our abilities, strengths, skills, etc.

Also resistance is both our enemy and our friend.
Because the problems that we must overcome
support us and make us stronger in overcoming them.
The resistance of change and much more.
It is both easier not to change anything, and harder.
Because one shift can cause an avalanche.
That is the proverbial "ball" that we get rolling.
It doesn't just get rolling on its own.
Just like changes just don't occur on their own.
It requires effort, consistency, time, patience etc.
It requires the willingness to even make the effort in the first place.
Willingness comes from the desire for the results.
If they didn't want to give it their best efforts to win that gold medal,
they would never have bothered to go to the Olympics.
If they didn't want to thrive at rowing and be the best there was,
they wouldn't have ever gotten into the boat.
If they want something, they had to do something.
That is how they got to where they did.
This is why after over 80 years, people (like me)
are still reading about them. Their story, their legacy.
Everyone has a story, a legacy.
Everyone can 'win' the proverbial 'gold'
but they have to show up, attend, participate, hone their skills.

They are only destined to be great if they decide to be great.
Thus is the lesson for today.
