Doing the Tourist Thing

Been getting out of the apartment a lot more now that the weather is nice.
Still gets a little bit cold, but it will warm up from here on out.
Providing it doesn't snow again.

Been sleeping a lot better, too.
Thanks to Sean and Margo :D

Saturday, we went to the Mint where they make collector coins.
The coins made for general circulation are made in Winnipeg.
My son collects coins. He bought himself a roll of 50 cent coins.
I've bought him coins in the past.
It's one gift I can never go wrong with for him.

Today, we went to the Arboretum and to Little Italy and China Town.
The trees are budding, the lake and the canal were very low, though.
I guess they drain it and clear the garbage out of it.
That's how they found that bag of bones that one time. Years ago.
They found out the bones belonged to a murder victim
of a serial killer who lived near where I used to live when I was a kid.

Anyway, we walked up to the locks by the university.
I took some pictures I'll probably upload soon.

There was a weird tree. I forget the name of it now.
It had these weird seed things on it.
I saw one of them and thought it was a caterpillar, but it wasn't.
Wasn't until after seeing the tree that I knew it was from the tree.
We also saw that there was a huge tree that was hollowed out.
Eaten from the inside by termites, I guess.
There were holes in some of the trees that squirrels were going into.
So small were the holes that you'd never guess a squirrel could fit through.
But it did and I saw it. watched until its tail disappeared.

We had dinner at an Italian restaurant in Little Italy.
There's a little bakery around there that has really good desserts.
Also, there is a deli and a pasta place that look really good.
Definitely worth going back to.

I'm looking forward to when the flowers start blooming
and the weather gets warmer, and the trees have all their leaves.
When the water is higher and the boats come through.
Ottawa can be very pretty in the right places and seasons.
Depends on where you are and what you're looking for.
Sometimes you find things you weren't looking for.
This city can be a museum in and of itself.
So much history here. Buildings from 1820's and things like that.
Every historical building has a story behind it.
These historical buildings are heritage sites and are preserved.

I like the history of this city. The past has always been interesting to me.
I know that looking back on it doesn't change anything,
or bring us back to simpler times,
but it amazes me how different life was for them.
Compared to how the city has changed until now.
How it continues to change, and how it will change.
One day, I won't be here, and this building might not be here.
This area might change so much.
Before, there was literally nothing here. Just farmland.
In several sections of the city, there was nothing.
No Kanata, No Barrhaven... No Fallowfield.
There were street cars that only went so far in the city,
and there were dirt roads. There were horses and wagons instead of cars...

Ottawa was even a city before it was called Ottawa.
When it was only Bytown. Named after Colonel By.
The old Jail down town (now a hostel) was there before confederation.
Before 1867. It has a stone sign above the door reading Gaol.
I guess they were illiterate. Maybe Jail was spelled Gaol back then.
Who knows? It's still interesting. I like the old buildings.

We saw some old buildings today. Some by the locks.
Hartwell's Locks? I think that was the name of the place.
There were three or four buildings that looked really old.
Maybe from the early 1900's or late 1800's. Wooden buildings.
One of the buildings is being lived in.
I think the land is owned by Parks Canada.

Ottawa has this thing every year called Open Doors Ottawa.
Or something like that.
It is a tour of all these places that aren't generally open to the public.
So that's a neat thing to see. Also, there are a lot of embassies in Ottawa.
We walked by the Embassy of Kuwait. On Saturday.
And the American Embassy. There are lots.
Actually, there are 131 Embassies in Ottawa.
I didn't know there were that many, but I had to look it up.

Things are going alright. Just been busy.
But in a good way.

I'll upload some pictures soon.
