July seems to be moving pretty fast so far. June kind of flew by. Except the end of June. Seemed to go at a normal pace. I like that it's warmer here now than it has been for a while. Felt like summer just wasn't ready for us. Winter didn't want to bugger off. We still had snow in April. Which isn't all that common. It has snowed here in May, which rarely ever happens. I guess it does happen every once in a while. I think the last time was decades ago.
It has rained here a bit. There seems to be a drought in the west. B.C hasn't gotten much, if any rain. Someone who lives out there told me it only rained once this summer. That's very unlike B.C. In the winter it rains there like it snows here.
Here, we only really have two seasons. Winter and Construction.
Speaking of construction... There's been lots of renovations around here. The mall next door is getting an overhaul. They are demolishing the old parking garage by the bus station. Re-routing the entrance to the mall, re-routing the buses, too. It'll be a while before they start constructing that part since they have to clear away the debris. It'll be interesting. Will be nice to have it all finished. Finally.
Even in this building, they were fixing things up. Some of it isn't done, yet. They are still fixing up the laundry room. Putting in new tiles. So far they put in a new lobby, replaced the carpets in the hallways, repainted the hallways and all the doors. They replaced the tiles by the elevators, too.
They are changing the name of the building. It's part of their 'community revitalization' thing. The neighbourhood had a bad reputation years ago. I guess it improved when they started doing records checks for renting. I guess they won't rent to anyone who fails the records check. Which is pretty discriminatory if you ask me. They are trying to cater to the upper class now.
What my buddy said about all of this is: "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig." Sure, it looks nice, on the outside, but on the inside it'll still be the same. All these promotions, commercials, cosmetics aren't going to change things much. They call them 'upgrades'. How about fixing the basic things first then do 'upgrades'? My apartment hasn't been painted in 10 years. As well as a bunch of other things I could list. As long as all that stuff is behind closed doors, they don't care. As long as what they ARE doing gives them an EXCUSE to RAISE the rent. Lots of people are moving because they just can't afford to live here anymore. As long as they get MORE and MORE money, they don't care.
Anyway, I just don't see these cosmetic things being necessary. There's fancy and there's functional. There's no need for fancy. It only looks nice. It doesn't have any other function. Like why does the lobby need a waterfall AND a fireplace? Oh, and they are talking about offering concierge services. WHY the F*CK do we need that? So that everyone pays an extra $100+/month? It's just getting ridiculous. They think they are making things better. Try keeping it affordable. I think affordability would be better than any of this crap we don't need.
