I'm on STRIKE!!! (Joking)

I remember when Ottawa had a public transportation strike.
No busses for over 50 days. During the winter. It was pretty bad.
I also remember when it was over.
The riders were promised free rides for a certain amount of time,
but they ended up cutting that time short from what we were supposed to get.
That kind of ticked me off.
Like what do we get for all that inconvenience?
It was more of a hassle than an inconvenience.

I remember the garbage strike in Toronto. In 2009.
I wasn't there, but Ottawa gets a lot of news from Toronto.
Not sure why. Their news doesn't directly affect us.
They are around 5 hours away.
It lasted 36 days. In 36 days, there ended up being 48,900 tonnes of garbage.
I guess it seemed longer to me than 36 days
because in my mind, it should take longer to amass that amount of garbage.
Even though Toronto is a big city. Around 4 times bigger than Ottawa.

The one I was remembering was in 2002, actually.
I guess they had another one in 2009.

2002 was 16 days, 2009 was 36 days.
So I guess it averages 1,358 tonnes per day.

There was a big brew-ha-ha about Toronto wanting to dump their garbage
in Ottawa and many are opposed to this.
Toronto can keep their own garbage.

Ottawa's garbage is about 675,000 tonnes per year.
Ottawa is 4 times smaller, so maybe if it were the same size as Toronto
we'd have as much garbage as they do. It just seems staggering.
Thousands of tonnes just blows my mind. Monthly or annually.
It's pretty sad that we live in a country that produces so much waste.

Other strikes we have are teacher strikes.
Which affects working parents, but it affects college and university students.
Who have to pay tuition and they don't get a refund. They should.
Especially if they can't finish their course and can't graduate.
Imagine being stuck with a student loan for a course you couldn't finish?
That would really piss me off.
When I was a college student there was no strike,
but I think the year after I graduated, there was one.

The only strike I can think of that might still be going on
is the casino. It's still open, but there are no shuttles to get there.

Then there was that taxi strike at the airport.
I think that's been over for a while now.

There's always going to be a strike somewhere. Guaranteed.

The first recorded strike:
"Towards the end of the 20th dynasty, under Pharaoh Ramses III
in ancient Egypton 14 November 1152 BC."

Then in the Industrial Revolution:
"After the second Chartist Petition was presented to Parliament
in April 1842 and rejected, the strike began in the coal mines
of StaffordshireEngland, and soon spread through Britain
affecting factoriesmills in Lancashire
and coal mines from Dundee to South Wales and Cornwall."
