The reason why we procrastinate
apart from the things we are procrastinating on being unpleasant,
or seemingly 'too hard', is that they are uncomfortable.
All things 'new' are going to be awkward because they feel uncomfortable.
So here are 8 Uncomfortable Things (that can make us more successful).
1. Waking up earlier
Ideally, we need 8 hours of sleep per night.
Sleep loss is accumulative. As I found out from working nights.
I had one night shift in the middle of the week.
So I'd be up during the day on the nights I didn't have to work,
and I'd stay up all night the night before I had to go to work,
then I'd sleep the next day and had to switch back to sleeping nights
for the rest of the week to 'resume' my waking life.
Let's just say that this 'strategy' caught up with me over time.
I still have a hard time getting to sleep at night.
Note to self: Stop watching freaky/spooky videos at night before bed.
I end up finally getting to sleep
when some people are getting up to start their day. I need to change this.
2. Public Speaking
I have a hard time with this. Apart from blogging.
But blogging is more like public writing than speaking.
Like I say, the more we do things, the easier it gets.
Public speaking is hard for those of us who are self-conscious,
but that ends up going away, over time. Gotta push through it
to become comfortable doing it.
3. Exercising
I go through spurts with this. Sometimes I have no problems,
sometimes I have lots of problems.
I end up taking the winter off from jogging, then find it hard
to get back into the routine I used to have until it gets warmer outside.
The thing with exercising is that it doesn't have to be so hard.
There are light exercises. We don't have to go full throttle each day.
We don't have to jump on any equipment. We can use our own body weight.
To get started, we can simply pick a time of the day to go for a walk.
Just a 10 minute walk down the street and back. That is a start.
Regular exercise changes the brain to improve memory and thinking skills.
4. Networking
We never know where, when, how we will meet people who can help us.
We might make connections to help us reach a goal,
and in turn become a connection to help someone else reach theirs.
The thing with networking is developing the ability to ask questions.
I have to admit that often I can't think of any questions to ask.
People have called me on this in the past and told me
that I should ask more questions.
We only get the answers to the questions that we ask.
If we never ask, then we might never find out.
Ask a question and let the other person talk.
Just by listening, we can really learn a lot!
5. Taking the Blame
It's not about taking the blame for someone else,
it's about admitting our own faults and our own mistakes.
It's important to take responsibility for our actions.
By taking responsibility, we're able to move on quickly.
Instead of dwelling in denial and making excuses for everything.
6. Continuous Learning
Nobody knows absolutely everything.
We're always learning some way or another unless we refuse to.
Some people get stuck in their ways and just don't want to learn.
But those are the same people who keep wondering why
they're always in the same situations in life.
We don't have to go back to school to learn.
Besides, what did we learn in school that we actually need in life?
Reading is a great way to keep learning new things.
The uncomfortable part is that most people only want to read for pleasure.
Instead of reading to build their knowledge and awareness.
7. Unplugging
We are guilty of letting technology rule our lives.
It's important to take a break from technology and get back to nature.
Breathe some fresh air. Go outside. Get busy doing something else.
The time we spend with technology slows us down in the long run.
We become too dependant on technology.
To overcome the discomfort of being unplugged,
try unplugging at the times you want to be plugged in the most.
8. Purposely Meeting Adversity
Finding something to challenge us can sometimes be challenging.
But there are things out there that we can get involved with
that are challenging, that will allow us to meet the challenge.
If the challenge is uncomfortable, the best way to get over the discomfort
is to jump in and start doing it.
So those are the 8 things that are uncomfortable,
but if we start doing, they'll help us become successful.
