Winter & Construction

It is said that Ottawa has two seasons. Winter, and construction. Winter sucks, but at least we don't have to deal with construction. I swear, the management company I rent my apartment from... They look for things to redo, or renovate. All in the name of raising the rent. I think their plan is to turn this place into a condo. The rents are too high. People keep moving out to find something affordable, and I don't blame them. If it weren't for my safety net, I wouldn't be able to afford to live here, either.

Last year, they installed central air conditioning. They had to fit the entire building (12 floors) with air conditioning units that fit in the bathroom ceilings. The issue with this is that the unit that controls the air conditioning for the apartment above mine, is in my bathroom ceiling. All the way down the line. So the people upstairs were complaining that they didn't have any a/c. So the maintenance guy had to wake me up, and keep me up while fixing it for like half an hour. I get really grumpy when I'm really tired. I wasn't a happy girl.

Another issue with the a/c is that somehow... It flooded the elevators. We have one elevator working now. For whatever reason we have a security guard posted right inside the elevator. To operate the elevator. It's stupid. Imagine your job being to sit on a stool inside an elevator for 5 hours? Just pressing buttons? I find it annoying. I like being in the elevator by myself sometimes. Well, I guess that's better than no elevators working. We spent an entire weekend with no elevators running. It sucked.

Last year, they put in new living room windows, and balcony doors. That took a long time. They had to do every apartment....

This year, they decided to renovate the lobby at the main entrance. So they decided to put the temporary main entrance at the back. Through an apartment. Yeah... They put up a wall that closes off most of the apartment, but we are literally passing through what would be the living room of the Super Intendant's old apartment. It's weird.

They gave us outdoor mail boxes when there wasn't anything wrong with our old ones. Just this thing with Canada Post to stop door to door services. Which is weird because when I order something that I have to sign for, they bring it to my apartment door.

One year, I think it was the year before last, but not sure... Anyway, one year... They re-did the entire parking lot and that took a really long time. They were digging trenches (not sure why). It took a really long time to complete that. I'm just tired of all the renos around here.... They are renovating the mall, also.... They have yet to open the new Target in the mall. The only one in Ottawa that isn't open yet. They are doing a good job, though, and they are rebuilding the parking garage. It will look really nice when they are done. Just... It is taking forever. The mall has a food court, but besides that, there is no place in that mall to buy groceries... At least when they had Zellers, we could at least buy eggs, bread, milk, etc. The closest place, now, is the pharmacy. Then, there is Giant Tiger (one of our only Canadian stores left. I'm glad we have at least one left.) Or, there is going to Metro at the other mall near here. It is just stupid that for all the people living over here.... That there isn't a grocery store in that darn mall. There used to be, but they closed because they were overpriced. I guess to rent a store, the rent is high. It's supposed to be a high-end mall, in a neighborhood that is akin to a ghetto. I guess they are trying to fix it up to make it less like a ghetto and raising the rent is their answer to getting low-income people to move out. Not saying that all low-income people are thugs or anything like that. Not at all. Just in my experience low income people are pretty much forced to live in ghettos because they can't afford better.

They even changed the name of the neighborhood. People are still going to be calling it by the name it has always had. It's pointless to change the name of a place that's been what it's been for over 40 years. They think that by changing the name, the image will change along with it. Nice try.

I was supposed to go to this coffee thing tonight, but apparently it was last week. I missed it. I'm still going out though. Not sure where, yet.
