Today is Remembrance Day... This we know... But do we truly know the extent that soldiers AND civilians went to so that we could live in peace in many countries around the world?
We turn on our televisions, we use our telephones, we shop at stores and are able to access what we need. Not to mention all the other things we have and are able to do (that we often take for granted) because someone fought and DIED for US.
When we send a text message or receive one... When we go to a movie theater... When we take a bus or drive a car... When we DO ANYTHING... Do we really stop to think about what a living hell wartime was? Do we even think about the countries NOW that are still at war?
I believe that the second World War was wagered when the Holocaust began. And yet there are ignorant people who still deny that the Holocaust ever happened?! Just because it was so unimaginable that they cannot fathom such suffering does not mean that it never was a REALITY.
When most people think about Remembrance Day they think it is just about the soldiers who made sacrifices. Yes, soldiers did make sacrifices. Yes, soldiers ended the war. Yes, soldiers rescued people and saved many lives. Because of this we get to sit at our computers and play around with our iphones and only think about them once a year. The war did not last one day out of the year. It was 4 years of HELL ON EARTH for those involved, whether they were fighting or being oppressed.
In the span of those 4 years MILLIONS of people DIED. Why is it that we express our 'appreciation' only once a year and actually recognize this? If we truly did appreciate what was done for us it would be appreciated so much more and we would ALL be thankful. GRATEFUL! Instead we just gather this one day out of the year when they deserve much more RESPECT than this...
If it were not for WWII, I would probably not be alive. My Grandparents both joined the army and met during their service to Canada. If you really want to know what the war was like, ASK A VETERAN. No amount of footage can ever cover what it was truly like to have BEEN THERE.
Remember that as much as this day is about soldiers, it is also about who they have saved. About true appreciation, gratitude, and RESPECT!
